Baucau is known amongst the East Timorese as "Rock City". It is easy to work out why as the city has been constructed on an extremely rocky part of the country. Baucau is the second largest city in East Timor and seems to exhibit none of the characteristics of the largest city-Dili. It is far more laid back, cooler in the evenings, and hardly any traffic! |

| | There are two main parts of town. Kota Lima (The Old Town), and Kota Baru (The New Town). Everything that is worth seeing is in the Old Town, so that is where you will stay. You can walk around the old town quite easily as it is quite small. If you do wish to visit the beach it is about an hours walk from the old town down the hill, therefore at least an hours walk on the way back. Alternatively, get a Mikrolet, or car. The largest airport in East TImor is located outside Baucau and can actually land Jumbos unlike the capital, Dili. Hopefully one day there will be more flights into this part of East Timor, as I found it far more appealing than Dili. |
