Maubisse is the main town in the central highlands, south of Dili. It is a welcome break from the heat of the coastal regions of East Timor.
The town itself is quite small and as such doesn't have much in the way of sightseeing options. The Church of St Matthew, the Central Market, the large cemetery, a remnant from 1999, are the main points of interest here in the town.

However, the main aspect that attracts you to Maubisse is its location. The mountain scenery around here is simply magical, and there are only a few places in the world where I have experienced this.
If you stay in the Pousada (the main accommdation option here), wake up early, or embrace a sunset. Enjoy the show as the mountains around you change colour and shape, whilst the air remains cool and still, broken only by locals chatting or the occassional rooster crowing.
The drive from Dili takes between 3-4 hours each way, with probably about 2 or 3 flat and straight stretches of road on the whole trip. The scenery again is simply stunning. Life here is so simple, and you wish and hope that it remains this way as so many of the pepole seem happy. However, with East Timor now a country, it is inevitable the countryside will open up to tourists and other western influences. Make sure you make the effot not to miss this magical place.
