| Registan Motif- Samarkand-Uzbekistan |
Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in Uzbekistan and the world. Established during the middle of the first century BC under the name Marakanda and later known as Afrosiab. It was the capital of Emir Timur's great empire. The numerous monuments of Samarkand and its suburbs impress with their beauty and splendor. The refined architectural shapes, intricate ornamentation, mosaics, blue-tile domes and facades are interesting for all who visit theses beautiful buildings. The Registan is the main place to visit. Other places of interest are the Shahi-Zinda necropolis - the most remarkable monument in Samarkand and the Guri-Emir mausoleum - the grave of Timur, his sons and grandsons. The history of the city is connected with the names of outstanding writers, scientists and artists from the East. There is alot to this city. It's a big city that thrives as I expect it always has. The motif above is of a Lion chasing a deer overlooking a Mogul Sun. It is taken from the top of The Sher Dor Madrassah from the Registan. It is an important symbol of Uzbekistan. |

| | The majestic Registan square consists of three Madrassahs namely the Ulugbek, Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kari Madrassahs. The Uzbek government spends alot of money and time ensuring these incredible buildings are maintained to their full beauty. |
Pictured to the right, is the spectacular dome and minaret of Guri Amir Mausoleum. Read the must see activities for more information on this impressive monument. | | | Dome of Guri Amir Mausoleum-Samarkand-Uzbekistan |
