Tashkent

by Groverdean - last update: Jan 5, 2005

Uzbekistan Globe-Tashkent
Tashkent is the most modern of all the Central Asian capital cities. It is the base for many western companies in the region. As such it is quite cosmopolitan, attracting all comers from around the globe and Central Asia.
In terms of historical monuments and sights, or the experience of immersing yourself in some Uzbek culture, their are better places to do this. However, because it is so cosmopolitan, has wealth, and is fairly modern, one should defintely not bypass this city. I enjoyed my stay here. There are great restaurants, cafes, nightclubs. It is where Central Asia meets the West-head on!

Yes, Tashkent has much more to offer than just to land and depart from there :-) The Timur museum is quite good, but I was much fed up finally with how they glorify and "annect" him.

I do not see a reason to use black market. There are Western Union's everywhere. Of course, if your money is not crisp (new) they wont' take it. Go to the bank and have it 'exchanged' for new money to save yourself hassle.

Useful tips. I'll look for the Efes sign.
