Almaty is a very cosmopolitan city, offering many of the comforts and facilities of a Western city. In my view the best modern city in Central Asia. Formerly the capital of Kazakhstan (now moved to Astana), it should not be missed.
The photo here is taken in Republic Square. It is a very popular place for locals to have their wedding photographs taken. The woman in the centre is in Kazakh traditional clothing. She gets paid to be in the wedding pictures and to realise the dove she is holding, of course symbolising the happy couples love. |
