Seasonal Events: 11th September is the...
  • Tip Rating:
  • 11th September is the Commemoration of the fall of Catalonia and particularly Barcelona, on the 11th 1714 September at the hands of the troops of Philip V, with the consequent abolition of all Catalan Institutions of self-government, has become a symbol of catalan nationalism, repressed during Franco's time but held in secret. With the establishment of a democratic government, the 11th September recovered its highly festive character, with public gatherings in the 'Fossar de les Moreres', where the war heroes are buried, and in front of the Rafael de Casanova Monument, who led the troops at the time of their defeat. It is customary to hang the 'senyera', the Catalan flag, from the balconies of every house. If you come any 11th September you'll see red & yellow flags everywhere.
