Located on the Missouri River, the once-thriving town of Weston can credit its early success to tobacco growing and trade. Today, tobacco production still plays a part in the area’s economy. Five tobacco barns, one of which has been converted into a reservable enclosed shelter, remain in Weston Bend State Park to interpret the important role this industry played in the area’s history.

A scenic overlook, accessible to persons with disabilities, provides visitors with a view of the Missouri River, Fort Leavenworth and beyond. A hiking trail that meanders through the woods and along the edge of the bluff also provides great views of the river. Hikers and bicyclists will enjoy the peaceful setting of the three-mile paved loop trail that weaves through a hilly wooded area.

Secluded picnic sites, a playground and an open shelter, which can be reserved, make it an ideal place for family gatherings. For visitors wishing to get away for more than a day, a campground featuring basic and electric campsites, modern restrooms, hot showers and laundry facilities are available.

Watkins Mill State Park has a small lake for fishing, swimming from the beach and boating or canoeing. You can also camp in the campground with 60 campsites, some with full hookups, ride on an asphalt bicycle trail, or go hiking. A naturalist is on duty seasonally. Also visit WATKINS WOOLEN MILL STATE HISTORIC SITE. 818 acres; camping, picnicking, hiking trails, boating, boat ramps, fishing, swimming, pets on leash, bike trails and visitor center.

Following the shoreline you'll find a 3.8-mile asphalt bicycle trail. It's not a difficult road, but the tranquil landscape makes it a perfect outdoor getaway.

Smithville Lake
After consistent flooding, on July 13, 1976, at 8:30 a.m., The Little Platte River was diverted from its normal course to permit construction of the Smithville Dam. By 1982, the lake was filled and was soon providing not only a water source for Kansas City, Missouri, but also a 7,000-acre recreational area for an estimated 1.9 million visitors each year. Smithville Lake has over 175 miles of shoreline offering excellent boating opportunities. There are two full-service marinas offering boat and slip rentals, bait, fuel, both patio and indoor dining and live entertainment. Slips, moorings and dry sail facilities may be rented through the Clay County Parks office. There are beach areas at both Little Platte and Camp Branch with plenty of room for water activities and sunbathing. Facilities include shower and changing rooms. The southern half of the lake basin is available for water skiing and innertubing on a year round basis. The fish are biting at Smithville Lake! Tiger musky, walleye, largemouth bass, crappie and several species of catfish were originally stocked.
