Kansas City has a beautiful new outdoor shopping area called Zona Rosa. Why haven't I posted any pictures? My wife and I went to Zona Rosa on Sunday, April 3rd, 2005. We were starting to take pictures of the many restaurants as well as the streets and storefronts. We were confronted by an employee of Zona Rosa who told us that photography was prohibited because the owner was afraid someone would steal his designs. This was very embarrasing to both of us and we left the area without spending any money.

The site has a great PDF file you can carry with you. It states in part: "Similarly, some corporations have a history of abusing the rights of photographers under the guise of protecting their trade secrets. These claims are almost always meritless because entities are required to keep trade secrets from public view if they want to protect them. Trade secret laws do not give anyone the right to restrain photographers from taking photographs from public places."

If you come to Kansas City, and care about your rights as a photographer, please consider going somewhere besides Zona Rosa.

The picture to the right was taken outside another oudoor shopping area, the Country Club Plaza. We have taken hundreds of pictures there without incident.
