The first construction of the church dates back to the 12th century, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1258. Afterwards it was built in Romanesque style and then in Gothic style, and was ended in 1511. In 1945 most of it was destroyed by the bombings and was restored. It was reopened in 1952. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is Austria's most eminent Gothic edifice, houses a wealth of art treasures, some of which can only be seen during a guided tour. Take a walk around the church to admire the colorful roof with geometric motifs. At one side of the cathedral rises the 137-meter-high tower, called “Steffl” by the Viennese. It’s one of the most lively squares of the city, flanked by beutiful palaces and luxury shops. Also two fountains are located here and in the middle the Pestsäule, typical expression of Viennese Baroque style, rised in 1693 to thank for the end of the Black Death.

The most famous boulevard in Vienna, 6km, long, made up of wide tree-lined roads, which form a ring around the inner city. It was built in 1860-65, where the medieval fortifications were situated. It’s flanked by grandious public buildings and palaces, built between 1870 and 1880 and beautiful gardens. Its grandiosity, the sorrounding parks and gardens and its liveliness make it one of the most beautiful streets in the world. From 1283 to 1918 it was the residence of the Habsburg emperors; it’s made up of buildings of different ages, so it lacks an architectonic unity, but its grandiosity and historical events made it an incomparable monument. The New Palace (Neue Burg) is the most recent building and, at the same time, most monumental section of the Imperial Palace. It now houses the Ethnological Museum, branches of the Museum of Fine Arts: the Ephesus Museum displaying art from classical antiquity in Asia Minor, the Collection of Arms which ranks as the second-largest in the world and the Collection of Historical Musical Instruments. Some of the “must” to visit are Imperial Apartments, Imperial Silver Collection and Secular and Ecclesiastical Treasuries Today, the Imperial Palace houses the offices of the Austrian president, an international convention center, the chapel where the Vienna Boys' Choir sings mass on Sundays and religious holidays, the hall in which the Lipizzan stallions of the Spanish Riding School perform, various official and private apartments and several museums and state rooms which are open to the public.
