Name of Shop: The Liberty
This lovely department store dates to 1875. It's definitely worth a stroll through, even if you don't buy anything. Old wood fixtures and an elegant feel make it a nice, quick browse, and the Tudor architecture is beautiful!

Name of Shop: Fortnum and Mason
This is truly a department store, selling upscale clothes and such, but its glory is the ground floor, which is the food hall. Red carpets and chandeliers set the mood as you stroll through aisles full of specialty teas, coffees, jams, and sweets. Many are relatively inexpensive, and the teas are excellent! I definitely recommend a stop here, if only to look around. There is also a tea shop and a full-service restaurant (haven't tried them yet).

Name of Shop: Fortnum and Mason
Red carpets, chandeleirs, topiary...not bad for grocery shopping, right? Even though you'll pay more for most tea, coffee, and biscuits on the main-floor food section here, it's worth it for the experience (and the tea is the best I've found in London)!
What To Buy: Loose and bagged teas, the Fortnum brand thin mints, local preserves and honey, gourmet pastries and deli foods.
What To Pay: More than average, but not outlandish.

Name of Shop: Food and Drink
This is the facade of Fornum and Mason, as in the tip above. It's a beautiful building, and its trademark clock is displayed on much of its packaging. Reminds me of the Marshall Fields clock on State Street in Chicago!

We will be in London for 3 short days and need all the help we can get. | fatdave Sat Sep 23, 2006 18:19 UTC Liberty's didn't open until 1875. It is far from the oldest shop in London. (But it may well be the nicest.) |
