Off The Beaten Path: Dead Man's Hole
  • Tip Rating:
  • I found this plaque underneath the Tower Bridge. A bit dark, isn't it? Reminds me of the Charles Dickens' novel Our Mutual Friend.

  • This isn't a huge secret, but I think it's under-represented in tourism info. The London Walks company hosts this guided 2 1/2-hour walk once a week, and the guide, Jean, is a fascinating historian/storyteller who brings the London of Dickens' day to life. You'll pass by places he lived, work, and ate, and find locations that inspired his greatest works. Fascinating and well-done.

Cost is about 5 GBP each.

You were on the wrong street if you were on Melcombe. The opening scene of "A Hard Day's Night" took place on Boston Street right beside Marylebone Train Station!

Liberty's didn't open until 1875. It is far from the oldest shop in London. (But it may well be the nicest.)
