  • Nightlife Spot: Her Majesty's Theatre

London theatre at its best--Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre, near Trafalgar Square
I actually liked the Chicago production of this play that I saw while it was on tour a bit better. But seeing it in the original setting and with real British actors is terrific, and the souvenirs are much cheaper there!

  • Nightlife Spot: Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

An open-air theatre on the original location of the Globe known to William Shakespeare himself, this is now a very popular venue for Shakespearean productions in London.

I saw Romeo and Juliet here in 2004, and the setting really does bring it to life. Except for a dreadful Juliet who most likely bought her way into the play, the other actors were superb, and live musicians provided accompaniment on period instruments.

Buy the tickets in advance! They're not too expensive compared to most London theatre prices.

Dress Code: None required, but some people were smart casual. If you're a "groundling"--standing on the floor in front of the stage--you would be most comfortable dressed casually.
Directions: South Bank, along the Thames. Closest Tubes are Mansion House, Waterloo, or St. Paul's.

Great page, I almost booked a ticket to London after journeying through it. I should see more of the sites on my "doorstep". Happy travels.

You were on the wrong street if you were on Melcombe. The opening scene of "A Hard Day's Night" took place on Boston Street right beside Marylebone Train Station!
