Queen Mary's Gardens in The Regent's Park, near the Baker Street Tube stop. Here is the overwhelming circular rose garden, surrounded by draping garlands of rose vines--just spectacular! Free admission to the gardens--definitely worth a look, especially in late spring!

Visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum! A literal shrine to Sherlock fans, this is a very faithful recreation of Sherlock's residence (especially as depicted in the Granada TV series with Jeremy Brett). It even has real candles burning in the study, and the other floors hold interesting wax models depicting scenes from the stories. The main floor is the museum's gift shop (you can get in here without paying admission), which is where I dropped far too many GBP's...

A beautiful landmark, and the guided tour was one of the highlights of my trip--an utterly fascinating background on the English throne, with a verger guide that could recite dates and names at an alarming pace! Westminster Abbey is home to Poet's Corner, where many of Britain's greatest writers are buried and/or honored with a stone.

This is the beautiful sunken garden in front of Kensington Palace--near the gift shop. It's just lovely, and roped off so you can only see it through alcoves in the hedge. While you can get a guided tour of the inside of Kensington Palace (most recently famous for being Princess Diana's home), you can walk around the gardens for free.

What amused me about this shot was that I took it in on my first day in London, hoping to show off all the British cultural splendor. Looking at it, I realize that the two most visible signs in the background are McDonalds and Coke. So much for escaping American ads. :) Oh well, at least there's a double-decker bus behind me!

This is the Horse Guards Dismount Ceremony, which happens daily at 4 PM at the Horse Guards Parade area near Buckingham Palace. Obviously, based on this picture, you can get an excellent view without waiting forever, unlike the Changing of the Guard at the actual Palace. It's a very solemn but entertaining ritual, and I'd recommend seeing this over the traditional ceremony.

During the 1960's in London, this was the "in" place to be and the center of youth culture, but it's now a piece of faded glory, I suppose...still fascinating to a 60's rock fan like I am. Mostly touristy shops now (some tacky, some not so bad), it's surely worth a stroll and a picture or two!

We will be in London for 3 short days and need all the help we can get. | fatdave Sat Sep 23, 2006 18:19 UTC Liberty's didn't open until 1875. It is far from the oldest shop in London. (But it may well be the nicest.) |
