The Thanet Hotel: Great B&B near Russell Square!

The tarrif for a quad room (small private bath) was 108 GBP/night--not bad for a great London location.
Unique Qualities: The full breakfast here is great--especially the porridge, and the owners and all the staff that we met were personable and helpful. It only has 16 rooms, so service is very personal and breakfast is unhurried. They have won numerous awards (including one for most beautiful small hotel entryway, thanks to their lovely plants!), and a walk to Russell Square Tube station takes about five minutes. The rooms toward the back look out on a little garden and are very quiet at night. We stayed in a quad room on the first floor, which, although cramped like most London rooms, was clean, inviting, and very functional.

This is the quad room, with one double and two single beds with private shower. Definitely one of the better values in London, especially for its convenient and safe location. The room was always clean and has a good selection of biscuits and tea re-stocked every night!

94 GBP for an en-suite quad, 68 GBP for an en-suite double
Unique Qualities: I stayed here the second weekend we were in London, and it was very convenient for seeing things in the Westminster area of town. However, I enjoyed the Thanet Hotel much better overall--friendlier staff and a more homey feel. However, the Georgian House is very functional, clean, and comes at a reasonable price. Do bring earplugs if traffic noise bothers you--St. Georges Drive is a rather busy street.

We will be in London for 3 short days and need all the help we can get. | fatdave Sat Sep 23, 2006 18:19 UTC Liberty's didn't open until 1875. It is far from the oldest shop in London. (But it may well be the nicest.) |
