""Old" York -- great history, great for walking" York by londonlover
York Travel Guide: 1,617 reviews and 3,908 photos
I had two nights in York on my 2004 UK holiday-- on my way down from Northumberland to London.
Despite the overt touristy emphasis, York is a great little town...the history alone is amazing, with Roman and medeival walls, twisty little streets and ancient, sagging buildings, and plenty of shopping, museums, and restaurants.
York is worthy of a two to three-day visit on any UK holiday!
Must sees include:
York Minster
The City Walls
A Ghost Tour
York Castle Museum
The Shambles
Walking Tour of City
See my tips for more info.
- Pros:Easily seen on foot, something for everybody here!
- Cons:Swamped with tourists on the main streets
- In a nutshell:Great city with a northern England flavor

Very good tips. Love the narrow streets and alleys and shops of York. One of the best walking cities in England -Tony
Nice little page on York, looking forward to my visit next month! Happy travels, Claire :-)
Good tips for this lovely city, Tara, but I am not sure about veggie sausages! LOL Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy, healthy and travel filled 2007.
Yorkminster would be on the top of my list for places to visit. Your hotel overlooking this historic site sounded wonderful--your yummy breakfast didn't sound half bad either!! Regards from Texas....

Brief but informative.
Last visited York in the 1980's, but it looks much the same! !!Think I remember Betty's too! Do you think it's just Vt'rs that go 'round taking pictures of their food, 'cause I've found myself doing that too for my pages!
I haven't been to York since 1991 but it looks exactly as I remember. Not surprising, since most of it has been there for centuries. My favorite thing was walking on top of the old wall and looking down at the private gardens...Tom
The B&B is absolutely lovely. And York seems to be a VERY nice place. I have to add it on my "must list'".
You did make it to York! Love that place and would go back even for the tea!
