I love heights and panoramic views, and this has to be one of the best in the world. This is the 2nd floor observation deck of the Eiffel Tower. Behind me is the Seine, with the Montmarte area in the distance behind me. It's windy up there, but oh so romantic! It costs about 7 Euros to gain admission to the 2nd floor observation deck...about 10 Euros to get to the top (3rd floor). Believe it or not, I also noticed there is a skating rink on the 1st floor of the Eiffel Tower during Christmastime!

This may not be top priority if you've been to Paris before, but as a first-timer, I found a river cruise on a semi-enclosed tour boat to be a great way to get a feel for the topography of the Seine and the surrounding landmarks. Our cruise was part of the Golden Tour Day Trip we took from London, but you can catch your own on the dock adjacent to the Eiffel Tower. It lasts about one hour for a standard tour, with live and recorded narrative and even a "soundtrack" of typical Parisian music!

Originally called Place Louise XV because it was designed by the king's architect, and was constructed to display an equestrian statue of Louis XV. However, it is more infamous for being the location for the guillotine that executed so many people during the French Revolution. It's also an extremely busy traffic circle that takes a long time to get around as a pedestrian! The obelisk was given to King Louis Phillipe in 1836 from a viceroy of Egypt.

Sue08080 Sat Jun 3, 2006 08:22 UTC Paris and Philadelphia...two of my favorite cities! | sue_stone Sun Jan 1, 2006 22:14 UTC Hope you make it back to Paris again...for more than 12hours! They have just opened a Laduree in London so I may have to visit and try one of those macaroons : ) | pixxxie Wed Jul 27, 2005 13:41 UTC Don't worry about Beatchick's criticism. Macaroon is good *English*. You don't have to use the French word when you write in English. | BeatChick Sun Jul 17, 2005 01:10 UTC Hi, LondonLover, just wanted to point out that it is actually macaron & there is no coconuts in these confections. They are made of egg whites & almond paste & then flavored with whatever: roses, pistachios, etc. Excellent Ladurée tip, though! |
