ANTE ROMAM TREVERIS STETIT ANNIS MILLE TRECENTIS. (Trier exister 1,300 years before Rome) The "Red House" near the Hauptmarkt bears the inscription. Altough this is a medieval fiction, it has a historical background. Settlements of as early as the 3rd millenimu BC are known in the Trier valley and Trier was the first place north of the Alps to bear justly the name "city".
About 16 B.C. when Augustus was Emperor, the Romans founded AUGUSTA TREVERORUM - the later - TRIER- in the neighbourhood of a tribal sanctuary of the Celtic Treveri. By the end of 3rd century A.D. the Emperor Diocletian made Trier (now called Treveri) the capital of the Western Roman Empire an imperial residence as well. Trier became also a centre of early Christianity in that time. In the 5th century A.D. the Germanic Franks conquered Trier, and when it came to the partition of the Carolingian Empire in 870, Trier became part of the East Frankish (German) Empire. <p> The Market Cross erected in 958 on the Hauptmarkt (market) made this place a centre of the medieval city. In the 14th century the Trier city was the capital of the electorate, living through periods of high prosperity and despairing decline until the end of the electorate around 1800. Trier was French for a short time, but after 1815 it belonged to Prussia and after 1945 to the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Federal Republic of Germany.
