Restaurant Name: Best grub deals in Vegas (baby)
Although not all are my favorite restaurants, they are nevertheless the best deals in Vegas (hurry because corporate America is slowly eliminating all these great deals as incentives to gamblers and preferring to pander to locals to cash their paychecks and drop the kids off at Funland or the arcade- sorry for the commentary...)Here they are, courtesy of Vegas Insider (note: i had to spread them out into the other categories- cont'd below): 99 cent Shrimp Cocktail @ Golden Gate Still a Downtown classic........their restaurant also has a great steak deal.... $4.95 Steak Dinner @ Ellis Island - 24 hours - $4.95 (not on the menu, ask the server....it is always available) Flamingo & Harmon $1.50 microbeer. Again @ Ellis Island. They make their own.... They have a functioning brew pub, though they provide nowhere nice to sit down and enjoy it (E.I. is a smoky nasty old place). All the beers are very good (even their homemade root beer), and at $1.50 for a pint of microbrew, it's by far the best swill for yer buck in town. Becks Beer @ Casino Royale - 24 Hours - $1 Center Strip at the bar in the Casino Royale any hour of the day or night, order up an ice-cold bottle of Beck's. 3419 S. LV Blvd. Superbuffet @ Gold Coast - Daily - $4.45-$8.95/$9.95 The Gold Coast's Ports O' Call might be the city's best all-around buffet. 4000 W. Flamingo (near the Rio) Steak & Eggs @ Arizona Charlie's East and West - 24 hours -$2.49 breakfast of sirloin steak & eggs or ham-steak and eggs served 24 hours daily. AC East:4575 Boulder Hwy. / AC West: 740 S. Decatur Blvd.

Tortas El Rey (quickie...

Tortas El Rey (quickie Mexican- best Al Pastor in town) A tiny dbl. drive thru burger joint that was converted into the best Taco Truck in Vegas without wheels. Go through the drive through- it's quicker than waiting outside even if you are going to eat it there (the outdoor patio cover is actually fairly scummy and i wouldn't recommend it)
Favorite Dish: The Al Pastor burritos and tacos are f-ing delicioso, that's all there is to it. Al Pastor is marinated pork that has a tiny smoky/bbq type flavor and a lot of places don't serve it because it takes so long to make it just right. Everything else is also great there, from the Carne Asada (beef) to the tongue and brains (although i haven't gotten around to trying these last two at the time of this writing...)

Restaurant Name: Chicago Joe's
It is one of the few places in town that occupies an old house and makes good use of it rather than knocking it down and putting a Quickie Mart in (sorry for the editorial...). The ambience is great- cozy and fairly romantic. I like how you can order off of the chalkboard menu on the back wall.
Favorite Dish: Just about anything is great. It's all pretty much good Italian home-cookin'

El Sombrero: Mexican food- a Local Secret

Restaurant Name: El Sombrero
EL SOMBRERO This is a tiny way old mexican rest. with really good, fresh food and a kicking jukebox with all kinds of good mex. tunes from greats like Freddy Fender. It's a local fav. because it's like a nice little hideaway from typical Vegas. El Sombrero has been serving up great Mexican food for the last 45 years. super convenient for shopping at the Catholic Charities Thrift store and the Attic (swank, tho overpriced retro items bought from the Catholic Charities Thrift store), both of which are just accross the street.
Favorite Dish: The fideo soup is great (incredibly fine pasta in a light and delicate tomato/vegetable broth with Mexican spices. Excellent!

Restaurant Name: Lindo Michoacan
Lindo Michoacan Restaurant: burned down & recently rebuilt better than ever is by far the best authentic sit-down Mexican food in town. They have really great food, atmosphere, service (everybody is either family, or friends who have moved from Michoacan), and a great one-man band with an awesome neo-Elvis harcut and a great voice who is there nightly to personally seranade you through your huevos rancheros or awesome chile rellenos. This place is authentic, fun and tasty. The lime candies on the way out are downright swank and add that perfect finishing touch to a memorable and filling 'cena bien rica'.
Favorite Dish: Their chile rellenos are great and they make their own fresh tortillas near the front door. They have a large selection of unique dishes from the owner's home state of Michoacan, Mexico. The margaritas are strong and tasty too. (Ps.: Negro Modelo is the best beer with which to consume Mexican food). Their website has the whole menu on it too.

Super Mex (dumb name, I know) Restaruant & Cantina: Best Cheap Mexican sit-down food

Restaurant Name: Super Mex (dumb name, I know) Restaruant & Cantina
This place is one of the rare oddities in which a new restaurant moves in to a space formerly owned by a restaurant that went belly up, and somehow manages to pull it off and be a huge success. Although I honestly try to avoid chain type joints as much as possible, I had to make an exception for this one because the food and prices are just WAY too good. It's apparently the first restaurant in LV opened by a chain from So. Cal, but to their credit they were smart enough to move in to a swanky and tastefully appointed space abandoned by a fancyshmancy bistro joint (the one that went under), and the result is a super cheap, awesome dinner in a space that feels like Rodeo Drive. The location is on Sunset Road & Pecos, approximately 1/2 way between the airport and the Green Valley area, which makes it kind of not in the middle of the action in either place. But it's only a couple miles from my house (and technically on my street as well), and I'm happy to see that it is busy nearly every night of the week and burgeoning with bodies on the weekends, which tells me it's here to stay.
