The wife is a real life Nevada native and I am a 7 year transplant from central California. We have explored a great deal of the central and southern areas of this fascinating state and aside from the scorching Las Vegas summers (and becoming chosen as the lucky future recipient of the nation's nuke waste), we really love living here. LV is a great jumping-off point for adventures such as camping, rock climbing and hiking, visiting National Parks (5 are within about a 4 hour drive), seeing historical monuments, and enjoying the southwest mystique in general.

This picture is from the winning entry for a contest to invent a sign to warn future visitors about the high-level nuclear waste that will be stored in Yucca Mountain for the next 10,000 (count 'em) years. Yucca Mountain is approximately 90 miles north of Las Vegas. The artist's name is Ashok Sukumaran and his idea was to genetically modify the Mojave Yucca plant population around Yucca Mountain so that its leaves are a bright blue color instead of the normal green.
