There is two big islands in New Zealand. The north and the south island is very diffrent, if you must choose one of the then you must think about what you like to do
The north have the best beaches, most terminal activity, the biggest citys, most forest, big trees (Kauri tree) etc. The south island have good treeking, big mountains, nice sounds, nature, nice lakes etc.

But both island is fantastic, and together they have neary everthing. But if i must choose one of them then i think i will take both of them :)
