Favorite Thing: The streets of Pompei are not too large, even those that lead to the main cities attractions, almost all are straights and ortogonals, following the model of the Roman urbanistic tradition (Romans had two major streets called Cardum and Decumanum, that leaded to all around the city. One of this streets had an horizontal direction, the other one was perpendicular). The pavement is made with big cut basalt stones, and along every street, there were many houses and shops. The archeological escavations are easy to find from Napoli and from the other Vesuvian famous centers after taken the Circumvesuviana.

Favorite Thing: The columns you can see in this picture are a part ot the perimeter of the Basilica. They are made following the Dorian style. The architecture in Pompei and Ercolano is the Roman architecture, so you can find the same elements concerning houses (Domus), the Basilica, The Foro, etc.

Favorite Thing: Basically your visit to Pompei will follow a rectangular route. After entering you will notice three corps on your right. Continuing your visit you will see more corps of the victims of the eruption, but I thing the trio at the entrance is the most expressives. Their features are so spontaneous that you can imagine the panic they felt. To tell you the truth after seeing them I felt a bit shocked, becuase you immediately think about the eruption and you can imagine the confusion of those moments.

Favorite Thing: This picture is maybe the most shocked of these that I took, especially if you look at the arms of this man. It seems he was trying to fight versus an invisible enemy; the dust of pumice-stone and the poison gas of the eruption. The 38% of the victims died because of this dust. It burned their lungs and became a sort of cement that obstruct them. Many people died after breathing the gas.

Favorite Thing: The body of the victim you can see in this picture are not mummified. They are just an envelope due to the pumice-stone piled up and cementified. After the corruption of the body, the space that it occupied was empty so the archaeologists colarono some cement inside the "hole",and the cement takes the shape of the body that was there before the corruption. I apologize to you all for my explication but is not easy to describe this process in a foreigner language.

Favorite Thing: To be seen in modern Pompei is the Santuario della Madonna del Rosario (Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary), a neo-classic church which is a place of constant pilgrimage. You can easily find it becuase it stands in the main square of Pompei and I think is the only big church there, plus most of the buses stop not far from it, so you can miss it!

Favorite Thing: This is the interior of Santuario della Madonna del Rosario (Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary). As you can see the church is in neo-classical style with frescos of the XIX centuries. At the time of my visit the church hosted a wedding ceremony; a good chance to discover Italian traditions and life.

BruceDunning Tue Jun 9, 2009 19:28 UTC These are great pictures and comments about them. I hope to enjoy this area like you did some time soon. Ciao | margaretvn Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:28 UTC great page, we went there some years ago but plan to revisit and take more time for it. We were on a tour when we went. | caravaggio Sat Sep 24, 2005 07:41 UTC nice tricks..thxxxx | matcrazy1 Sat Jul 30, 2005 16:23 UTC A lot of good info, stunning pictures and... I liked Pompei a lot (and Capri, Vesuvio and Amalfi coast). Among ancient ruins only Ephesos in Turkey can compete with Pompei. |
