King Ludwig II has a great charm to me. I knew his life-history after visiting the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, and then I decided to see all his castles. Ludwing was born in 1845, and after succeeding to his father Maximilian II in 1864, he started to be interested in political problems about the rising "Germany". He stopped early his political activity, to satisfy his cultural interests. Immediately he became the patron of Richard Wagner, and the bonds of friendship between the two men will influence the life of Ludwig untill the end. He had a very sad existence as his dead; we think he died drowning in the Starnberg See, after his interdiction and his destituition in 1886.

King Ludwig II was well known for his eccentricity and his originality. He was a lover of Wagner works so inside the Venus Grotte, he wanted a sort of water-theater. You can read some infos below and from the castle official site: www.linderhof.de
"The artificial dripstone cave with its lake and waterfall was modelled on the Hörselberg from the first act of the Wagner opera "Tannhäuser". This natural stage, built in 1876/77 by the landscape sculptor A. Dirigl, was lit by arc lights. The electricity for this was generated by 24 dynamos in the machine house 100 m away, one of the first electricity works in Bavaria. The grotto features a "royal seat", a Lorelei rock and a gilt boat in the shape of a shell".
