Funchal, capital of the island of Madeira in which almost half of the population lives.
Landing at Aeroporto de Santa Catarina in Funchal is spectacular. The runway is rather short and ends in the sea. Every plane that flies in has to make a rather sharp curve on very low altitude so that, when you sit at the right side of the plane, it almost looks like the right wing touches the water! A great experience.
Funchal is situated in a large bay and surrounded by green mountains. The city has some very elegant boutiques, baroque churches, a colorful market and lots of bars & restaurants.
The city is devided in two parts: the city centre going from the Zona Velha eastwards upto the Casino and the hotel zone still further east.
Things to do/see in Funchal can be found in my various tips. Pictures are in my travelogues.
