Il Golfo dei Poeti

by myriam_c - last update: Sep 24, 2004

Portovenere is situated in the Gulf of La Spezia, better known as the Golfo dei Poeti. The gulf has wide and deep inlets and is surrounded by mountains. The coast has mostly high rocky cliffs and some wonderfully quiet bays.
Although the Golfo dei Poeti is very popular with tourists, the small towns are romantic and intimate. And vero Italiano!

Many pictures in the travelogue.
Portovenere is situated in the most western part of the Gulf of La Spezia. Portovenere is surrounded by city walls with 3 towers, sturdy bastions and a majestic castle to guard the village. The castle can be visited.
The harbour promenade is lined with the most colorful houses. This is really a very pretty little city!
Grotta Byron, Portovenere
The Grotta Byron, hollowed out in the harsh rocks of the shore that conduct to the Cinque Terre, is dedicated to the famous 19th century English poet, that lauded the beauties of the gulf even if he never visited it!
"This Grotto was the inspiration of Lord Byron. It records the immoral poet who, as a daring swimmer, defied the waves of the sea, from Portovenere to Lerici".
This text can be read on the rocks at the cave.
