Burg Eltz is one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Germany.
Burg Eltz was built in 1167 by Rudolf Zu Eltz. The location of the castle was set very strategically on a road that connected the Mosel (an important trade route of the German empire) with the fertile Eifel region. The river Eltz flows around three sides of a rock, which is the foundation of the castle.
Burg Eltz was initially not being built as a fortress but as a fortified residence. It is still in its original condition and the castle has remained in the hands of the same family for more than 800 years and for 33 generations.
As you will see in the pictures in the travelogue, Burg Eltz is surrounded by huge forests. A great spot for hikers! |
