To the extent that we can talk about 'off' the beaten path IN Rome and a place without tourists, I enjoyed walking the odd streets - the ones off Piaza Navona, or between Piazza del Popolo and the Vatican - and just watching the life of the Romans. I don't know how they cope with all the tourists, after 3 days even I couldn't stand them anymore ;-)
