Generally speaking, London is a very safe city, and tourists often comment on this. However, you should never let your guard down and always use common sense, whether you're walking around a busy pedestrian center or walking alone at 3 in the morning. London is notorious for pick pocketers who pray on jet-lagged and naive tourists, so it's always best to keep your belongings safe and always within hands reach. There are also some areas of London which can be especially rough, which includes the East End and Brixton. You might want to avoid these neighborhoods after dark. London is policed by three police services: the Metropolitan Police Service (often called the Met for short, or also called New Scotland Yard), the City of London Police, and the Royal Parks Constabulary (who police the city's many parks). Out of the three, the Metropolitan stands out as the largest and most important police force, with the most jurisdiction over the city. The Met is famous the world over for its unarmed photogenic "bobbies," who are very helpful and friendly if you ever get lost or have a question. If you should have any unlikely emergencies, always contact 999.
