Does it really need an introduction? | St. Paul's Cathedral and the River Thames |
London is one of the most fascinating and most visited cities on Earth. No...really...it is! It doesn't take too long to know why. Just try getting out of the Tube near Piccadilly Circus and you'll understand why--the confusion of passing taxis, hundreds of people walking by, electronic billboards and statues dotting the landscape is almost overwhelming.
London has endured for over two thousand years. Its conception as a regional hub by the Romans over two thousand years ago is the traditional birthday of London, yet Celtic tribes inhabited what is now the city for much longer. It became a Viking settlement during the Dark Ages, then an Anglo-Saxon stronghold after the Norsemen's political power weigned, and finally a capital by the Normans. London has survived countless monarchs, wars (both civil and international), famines, plagues, floods, pollution levels and so forth, and still stood strong. Once this city was the capital to the one largest empires ever known, where government and trade flowed through these streets to as far away as Christchurch and Cape Town.
Now London is redifining its role in the 21st century, from a capital to an empire that no longer exists, to a gateway to Europe; a financial and cultural center for both the UK and Europe. If New York was on one side of a bridge, then London would be on the other. |
