Newcastle's waiting for you. | Lookng out over the city and the Tyne. |
Newcastle upon Tyne is the last large city in England before you cross the regional border into Scotland. Like Manchester, Bradford, Cardiff, Liverpool and countless of other British cities, it experienced its most dramatic rise to fame and importance during the Industrial Revolution, when large steel, shipbuilding and engineering industries were based here. After the war and the fall of the Empire, Newcastle fell into decline, reducing a lot of its former grandeur to grimy milestones from an already distant past.
But beginning in the late '80s and early '90s, Newcastle got a much needed shot in the arm by government loans and the developing high tech industry. And it's worked. Today the city feels more alive than ever, with construction cranes dotting the skyline, bringing new opportunities into the city.
Thanks to two universities, Northumbria and Newcastle, the city has a vibrant young student population, who make the city's nightlife some of the best in Britain. Newcastleites, or "Geordies" as they're called, are big patrons to the arts, new cuisines, nightlife and socializing.
Newcastle is well worth a visit--even if it's for a few days--to experience the new atmosphere that's being born here. |

| Pros: | "A new, exciting atmosphere prevails here, capitalizing on the city's distant and near past. The nightlife is good, the people friendly, and the crowds of tourists are few." | | Cons: | "The weather can be outright cold and dreary in the winter, but that's to be expected." | | In A Nutshell: | "Newcastle is a fun town that takes all the newness in the UK and makes something of it. Well worth the visit!" |

MikeStarr5 Mon Oct 29, 2007 21:40 UTC Great pic - Thanks. Here in "Barking Town" we have the UK's 2nd largest public artwork called "Holding Pattern" - It's 70m long x 50m wide and almost 6m high. It cost £650,000 to build and only Anthony Gormley's “Angel of the North” is bigger. | sourbugger Sun Oct 2, 2005 20:56 UTC glad you enjoyed the delights of good old newky |
