If only I had more time... | Stirling Bridge on a rainy day. |
I've had the privilege to visit Stirling twice in January and December of 2003. Both trips just lasted less than a day, and I've kicked myself since both visits that I wasn't able to see more. Stirling for me is how I pictured Scotland before coming to the U.K.. Sure there's much, much more to Scotland, but for me, Stirling sums up my feelings for this country: old, green, gray, great to experience.
Stirling has a long history that goes back to prehistory. The Romans came and went, as well as the mysterious Picts. In the Medieval era, it saw William Wallace defeat the English armies here in 1297. A royal palace for the Scottish monarchs was built on a hillside overlooking the town. It also played a roll when the Bonnie Prince tried to reassert Scottish independence in the 1740s.
Today, Stirling's a great getaway from Edinburgh, just an hour south by train. From Stirling northwards, the land becomes rugged, and the Lowlands are replaced with the Highlands.
So here's Stirling. |
