AFRICA Pulls You In. Refuses To Let Go!

by safardreams - last update: Nov 13, 2005

"Bewitched By AFRICA!"

Have to see it, to Believe it!
An African Local said to me not long ago. A very good friend of mine:" You Are Bewitched By Africa". Very fitting, rubbed me the RIGHT way.
Been to Africa 6times now since Oct 1999. Zimbabwe being my first safari. I should get back there soon. Being my first safari, was difficult to take it all in the right way. NOW, I know what to expect and do. I should see my guide:
CRAIG VAN ZYL again. Great trip we had. How did I know it would get better with each one. How did I know I would go back so many times. I don't see my self being finished with AFRICA. As long as I have the means, the health, the time. I will always go there. I feel ALIVE, DIFFERENT,
not sure. Surely BEWITCHED. I have loved AFRCIA'S ELEPHANTS since a little boy. They are my number 1. Everything else is number 2. To have an Elephant in your camp, next to your truck, even charging you, walking near one or many. It is a great feeling. Knowing that visiting there, is helping in some way. To protect all Wildlife. The Human explosion, pathways being cut off,POACHING, BUSH MEAT TRADE, landscape being ripped apart. They wonder why some Elephants go on a Rampage. Then the Eles have to pay!
Not Fair At All.
I prefer to believe that by me and others who visit Africa. That most of the Funds are used for the Wildlife areas. At the least, if people keep visiting. There will always be a reason to keep the Wildlife around. To be honest, that is a way of thinking there in Africa.
Been to Southern Tanzania: Mikumi Park, Ruaha Park. Awesome places. Very wild and hardly anyone there. Visited the Gorillas & Chimps in Uganda. That was very exciting. Beautiful Country and some of the best people I have met in Africa. But, Kenya. Something about Kenya. Been there 5 times now. I feel no matter where I visit there in Africa. I have to at least go through there on the way home. To have a chance to visit with my Kenyan friends. Including Rangers in the KWS.
Already planning a March/April 2006 Safari. UGANDA and yes KENYA. The intin. so far: Many days Chimp Habituation & Tracking (Uganda). Then 3nts in Tsavo East (Kenya)-1nt Nairobi. You see, I have to go visit my driver Richard Kashu & KWS RANGERS in TSAVO EAST.
I will get back to Zimbabwe. Also interested in BOTSWANA. Of course, I will have to fly through Nairobi at least for 1nt. How could I not?!
Africa's Sunsets, Her Landscape, Her Wildlife, Her Star-Lit Skies, Her Wild in the Night Sounds. Africa's BIG-5 (Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo, Leopard), The Great Wildebeast Migration that crosses from Tanz to Kenya and back again. Even the silly Bucket Showers are BEWITCHING ME : )
Who I got that word from. My good friend: Jaynefer, at Great Lakes Safaris- Uganda. She threw it at me when I told her I wanted to come back and do the Chimp thing. Knowing I have been so many times. Always inquiring about Safaris. It's time people go visit this AWESOME place. See and do what most people only THINK about doing and seeing.

I have to dedicate this poem to the:
ELEPHANTS OF EAST AFRICA!

Speared and Died by an East African Tribe!

July 2004, in a EAST AFRICAN PARK
Another Elephant wails in the DARK
Encircled by Hyenas with spear wounds in it's side
The 18 month old looking to run and hide
Hyenas yell to the ground for more help
But an old Buffalo pushed then off
Will this 18 month old have ENOUGH?

To the swamp he runs, sits and hides
with spear wounds in his side
The Mobile Vets are on the way
A risky job they must do today
Will it be in vain to save this Elephant from PAIN
This little guy deserves better then this
I am sure he is missed!

The Vets move quickly to get the Elephant to a safe place
How can these people look at themselves in the FACE?
A heartless and cowardly act in this park
Hope they end up in the HELL OF DARK!
It is not fair
What has been and what is going on here!

The 18 month old tried and tried
He put up a fight, and also cried
His family I am sure miss him and are very sad
These people should be punished
That would make the Elephants very glad!
But this little guy
Was Speared and Died by an EAST AFRICAN TRIBE!
"HILL to BONES to CHARGE to SETS!

"HAD TO BE THERE!"

My first ELEPHANT CHARGE! This guy to our left! My driver at the time,
JOHN got a bit excitied. The truck was slamming all over the place.
This how the pics came out! Not
knowing that in 2002 they would come out much better! The BIG-
GIRAFFE BONES next to the DIP-
TANK! Looking out to the TAITA
RANCH WILDERNESS. That
beautiful MOUNTAIN! Last but not
least! One of the great SUN-SETS
of TSAVO in OCTOBER!!

"CLOSE, BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH!"

"ON FOOT AT TIMES!"

With not so much green. I felt at the time it was ok to shoot some BLACK n WHITE film! The ELEPANTS, ran off from the water tank! Why shouldn't they! They have been to HELL AND BACK!! Many of these ELEPHANTS remember the
HORROR of years past! But guess what! We found out the next year 2002, there is a poaching problem
again. Please, go and visit! The more people that visit, the better
for the ELEPHANTS and the other
WILDLIFE!! Some kind of EAGLE
PICKING AT SOMETHING! We tried to walk closer, but he took his meal
to the air! The bottom right hand pic!!
I'll just say for now! They were looking right at KALULU and I!! They
were maybe 100 to 200 feet away!
But this belongs in it's own T-LOG.
Along with the ELEPHANT CHARGE!

Nice pic of the Puff Ader. My farmworker at Shimba Hills spotted a similar one & have been unable to work in that area again.

I already have an idea!! There isn't one gosh darn decent place to eat within 2 miles of the Zanzibar airport. How about I open up a "Meals on wheels" cafe serving up hot dogs and crepes?!! That should help fund the African adventures! You in?! ;-)))
