"Jayhawk2000's Wilson" Wilson by jayhawk2000

Wilson Travel Guide: 10 reviews and 19 photos

Wilson calls itself the 'Czech Capital of Kansas' because it is home to several generations of Czech immigrants who through the years have kept their language, food and heritage alive.

Just two miles south of exit 206 on Interstate 70, Wilson makes a fantastic stopover. Be sure to visit the local museum and stroll through Wilson's wonderful downtown;

Browse the Kansas Originals Market directly on exit 206;

Take the scenic route down the South Shore Drive along Wilson Lake;

And hike through the hills above Wilson Lake down to its astounding rock-strewn shoreline.

Wilson is close to the cowtown of Ellsworth, the stone cathedrals around Hays and the crazy Garden of Eden sculptures in Lucas.

South Shore Drive without doubt is the most dramatic road in Kansas. It swoops atop the hills, dives into wooded draws and offers eye-straining vistas. Along most of the route you will see only one or two inhabited houses and maybe pass one other driver. However, there are innumerable old stone farmsteads, windmills and stone fence posts.

Wilson Lake and its surroundings is like a bit of Utah transplanted to the plains. For instance, these stone columns (the remnants of a stone arch) can only be reached on foot or by boat.

    Definitely out in the boonies of Kansas, but that is what makes it wholesome and pristine. Good work
