El Vado Motel: Get your kicks on Route 66
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Route 66 trailblazed the era of drive-in motels and the American Southwest still has some remarkable examples of these motor inns.

El Vado Motel at 2500 Central Avenue SW in Albuquerque is a prime example of the kitsch architecture that epitomises the Route 66 character.

Unique Qualities: Built in 1937 from adobe bricks to resemble an Indian pueblo, El Vado is listed on the National Historic Register.

The rooms are cheap, heavily varnished and a bit 'rustique' but you'd be hard-pressed to find anything with more charm and character!

Grants: Looking for a cheap sleep?
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Satisfaction:
  • Get yourself to Grants, about 25 miles from the Arizona border on I-40. Ideal for truckers, drug runners, the budget conscious traveller and other desperadoes.

Unique Qualities: This town is the capital of the no-tell motel, the type of place where the mattresses go saggy from corpses that aren't found for three weeks.

BUT we're talking less than 20 bucks a night for something that resembles a room. Well, it has WALLS, okay? Maybe not a roof, but definitely walls! FOUR walls, even, if you pay top dollar.

If you're lucky you'll be blessed with a flicker of electricity, a drip of water conveniently trickling from the ceiling and an antique sleeping apparatus that has had the 'do not remove under penalty of law' mattress tag gleefully ripped off by bed bandits.

If you survive the night then El Malpais National Monument is on your doorstep.

You pegged Santa Fe and all of its hype. Your comment on the one-third blue-blooded art collectors gave me a good chuckle. We couldn't wait to get out of there. It is like the southwest Disneyland Main Street. FAKE!

Your pics here crack me up! Great comparison of the architecture between European churches and Native American ones. This is one state I'd really like to explore.

Looks nice! I spent three summers in New Mexico many years ago, and have always wanted to return. -- Greetings from Frankfurt.

Strange when I saw the cliffside houses in Cappadocia I thought that they looked those in New Mexico. Great page with well written tips.
