We first visited Stuttgart over a long weekend during its famous Oktoberfest-style festival.
We flew into Stuttgart more recently on our way to Oktoberfest in Munich when I was able to update many of my tips with new photos. |
| | The centre of the city was hit hard during WWII, leaving the main shopping district bland but pedestrianised and done on a human scale. The surrounding hills have many fine houses which can be viewed from the superb trams which run along the streets.
Stuttgart is world-famous for Mercedes-Benz and Porsche cars, which have visitor centres here. This photo is NOT of the Mercedes-Benz museum, but the main train station! |
| The Stuttgart fairgrounds |
| | We made our first trip especially for the Canstatter Volksfest, a mammoth harvest-time festival rivalled in size only by Munich's Oktoberfest.
Several acres of fairgrounds along the river are given over to rides, beer tents, carnival games, markets and food stalls. There are five beer tents that each hold 5,000 revellers and hundreds of THOUSANDS people turn out for the fun.
Having now been to Munich's Oktoberfest as well, I'm wondering which was more fun? I'll let you know what I decide after another stein or two... it's all in the name of research, after all. |
