Ulp!

LONG way down (and not even halfway up)
On our way to Munich's Oktoberfest we stopped for a couple hours in Ulm whose cathedral is famous for having the world's tallest church spire.

The spire is a fairly modern construction, completed in the late 1800s specifically to outdo the towers of the cathedral in Koln. The lower floors are much more historic with lots to admire during your visit if, like me, you feel a touch of vertigo!
Fischerviertel (Fishers' quarter) from the spire
Elsewhere in town are ruined fortifications along the Danube, the decorated old town hall, some quaint back streets in the old fishing quarter and a postmodern new city hall which make the town a worthwhile visit for a couple hours at least.

Or there's always the C&A in front of the station for clothes shopping...!
Smoked glass and stained glass on one street!
In fact, the street leading up to the cathedral seems to be nothing but discount clothes shops, cheap bakeries and dated department stores. It's not the best introduction to the cathedral, but on the day of our visit there was a lovely produce market on the square under the church towers.

I once stayed overnight in Ulm, but I see I missed a lot. Happy Birthday.

Nice start on your new Ulm page! I've been to Ulm twice this year, but haven't done a page on it yet. (Maybe by Christmas, LOL.)
