Bayeux survived the German occupation and the subsequent Allied liberation pretty much unscathed, making it one of Normandy's best preserved medieval towns.
Look closely, though, and you can find some small vestiges of the fighting that took place here so many decades ago. |
| | Bayeux's many attractions, especially its cathedral and tapestry, attract great masses of tourists and school groups. Market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays, when Rue St-Jean is lined with produce sellers and other merchants. Wander around the back streets to escape the crowds and you'll find streets that look as if they have not changed for centuries. |
| | You can expect crowds most any day of the year, plus higher prices for food and accommodation. But in a place this lovely, it's worth it! It's perfect as a daytrip from Caen (20 minutes by train) or as a detour on your way to or from Cherbourg (50 minutes by train). |
