Augsburg was the closest we could get to Munich on the first Saturday of Oktoberfest, so we were up early to catch a train that would get us in to see the beginning of the opening parade.
The station was busy with revellers all kitted out in their gingham and suede. We had a go at buying our ticket using a machine, but as near as I could fathom there was no simple way of buying a ticket for Munich. Maybe it was for local journeys only?
Anyway, a young woman came up, asked if we were heading to Oktoberfest and wondered if we would like to join her and a friend on the same travel ticket. I'd head of these travel cards, where up to four people travel on one discounted ticket, so it sounded legit at first.
She took over the machine and began pushing buttons and I swear I saw her skip over the correct button. In fact, she seemed to not know which button to press at first. When it came time to pay, I said I was going to use my card. There was no way I was going to hand over any cash. She made a face, we made our excuses and bought our own tickets over the counter.
As Christian said, 'Where is this friend she's supposed to be with?' And what do you bet that in the scrum for a seat, she disappears with your cash and you're left holding a worthless ticket?? She might have been a friendly local, or she could be working this scam on tourists trying to get to Munich.
