Getting TO/AROUND: Although Bremen has its own airport, when flying from Manchester we had to fly into Hamburg and take the train to Bremen.
Hamburg's airport is not yet linked to the city's main train station (a situation due to be remedied) so till then it's necessary to take a bus into town. If city centre Hamburg is not your destination, then shuttle bus number 110 from the airport takes you to the nearest U-bahn station, Ohlsdorf. We took the Jaspar Airport Express bus, which provides a direct link to Hamburg's Hbf every 15 minutes. Journey time is about 25 minutes and a return ticket in 2006 cost 8 euro. Buy your tickets at the desk in Arrivals of Terminal 2 right before you exit the building and the bus arrives out front.
Once at Hamburg Hbf we were able to buy our train tickets and were soon on the sleek ICE train for a journey which only took an hour and cost 20 euro each for a single ticket. Coming back as we did on a Sunday, we were able to buy a Schoenes-Wochendende (happy weekend) ticket on which all five of us were able to return to Hamburg on the same ticket for only 30 euro. The German trains website is superb with multilingual pages: www.bahn.de.
