  • Favorite Thing: SIM cards can be bought at the airport. There is a DTAC booth outside customs in the arrival area. A SIM card costs 100 Baht, $3. That 100 Baht pays for the card and you get 50 Baht applied to your phone account. The best thing is they install the card and activate it for you! You don't have to read instructions or load long numbers into a phone system you can't understand.

Now that you have the card installed at the airport, you can start making calls immediately. If the taxi driver can't understand where you want to go, call your host or hotel and they will explain it for you.

To recharge, go into any 7-11. Buy a recharge card and hand your phone to the girl. She will recharge it for you. It just doesn't get easier. There may be a phone service that is a few micro-cents cheaper, but it just doesn't matter. Why wander the city looking for that super deal when you can get a good deal at the airport and you can get on with your vacation with the phone problem solved.

Thanks for a brilliant warning/tip. We are going to Thailand in Nov 09 and I have printed out your blog and will take it with us. We got conned very badly in Hong Hong and don't want to repeat the experience. Joy

Taxis now will charge a fixed fee to any unknowing farang who sits in a cab. They say they do not use the meter any more and make the fee a fixed 400 baht or more when the meter fare will be about 150 baht plus the airport fee of 50 baht.
