Seoul the Past, the Present and the Future in Harmony
Many visitors who set foot for the first time in the capital of South Korea are surprised by the dramatic modernss that swirls around Seoul. Not long ago, the Korean War nearly devastated Seoul. The city succeeded in rising from the ashes to become one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
Around 2,000 B.C., three kingdoms emerged on the Korean peninsula, among them Baekje, which governed the present area of Seoul. Baekje's first capital was here before being moved south. In 1392 the Joseon Dynasty was established; Seoul has been the nation's capital ever since, serving as the political, economic and educational hub of Korea. The long historical background of Seoul has handed down a wealth of precious cultural remnants from Stone Age chipped tools and ancient tombs to palaces, fortresses and temples.
When the economy started booming in the 1960s, Seoul burgeoned into a metropolis of 10.8 million. By some calculations Seoul now rates as the world's fifth largest city. And yet timeless patches of ancient architecture and cultural vestiges are kept well intact in the alleys behind the skyscrapers, to surprise visitors all over again.
Transportation
Even for the road-wise, transportation is not really the fun part of traveling. But Seoul's public transportation network centered on a metro subway makes it extraordinarily easy to get around; it is clean and safe with signs and announcements in English. Since its opening in 1974, Seoul subway lines have multiplied to 387 kilometers with 262 stations from Subway Line 1 to 8, intricately linked in all directions. The Seoul city bus network is equally remarkable. Daily 8,500 city buses run 400 different routes usually in 5 to 20 minute intervals.
From Incheon International airport to Seoul World Cup Stadium: City bus no. 601 or 602 (from 06:00 to 23:00) at about 20-minute intervals / taking 60 minutes
From downtown to Seoul World Cup Stadium: Line No. 6 subway passing through Seongsan Station, City bus no. 5-1, 135-2, 361, 438 or 824
