Romans, carnaval and wine

Mainz is the capital of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. It's located at the Rhine River, just on the other side of its rival Wiesbaden/Hessen. The city is home to about 200,000 inhabitants and is most famous for its carnival which takes place every year in February. So, if you come to Mainz in February, don't miss it! It's just fantastic, especially the Rosenmontags parade.
Another thing Mainz is well-known for is its wine taverns which you can find virtually all over the city, many are located in the Old Town though. Rheinhessen, the area surrounding Mainz, is Germany's largest wine growing area.
The city of Mainz can look back on a great history and you will come across many Roman remains.

Im Hyatt hatten die auch ein "Fort Malakoff Bräu" im Tonkrug. Sehr lecker! Schöne Seite, komme immer wieder gerne in die Heimat zurück.

I see you have added some new categories for the Mainz tips, and straightened out a mistake of mine in the process. I had put a State Theater tip under Rhine River by mistake, and now you have it under the new category Theatre. Looks good, thanks!

Hi Kristina. Probably the highlight of my life was my trip down the Rhine. We boarded at Koblenz and turned around at Mainz - I think ?? Also interested in (Saint) Hilda of Bingen. Thanks for the reminder. Laurie.
