The small (290km²) but beautiful island of Kos lies in the southeast of the Agean Sea, just a stone's throw away from the Turkish coast. The island has about 20,000 inhabitants and belongs to Greece since 1947. Before this time Kos was occupied by the Romans, Venecians, Italians and the Turkish. The capital of the island is Kos City which is located in the northeast as you can see on the map. The city has about 11,000 inhabitants and is famous for the so-called "Asklepieion", as well as for Hippokrates a doctor who was born there. The tree under which it's said he taught does still exist, it's located at Platía Platanou.
