Welcome to Florida

- The Sunshine State -

Florida is probably one of the nicest states of the US. It has beautiful beaches (especially on the Gulf of Mexico), cool cities and lots of attractions.
Some history: 1513: Juan Ponce from Spain discovers the peninsula and calls it Florida; 1565: St. Augustine, the oldest city of the U.S. is being built; 1763: Spain exchanges Florida with the British for Cuba; 1819: Spain sells Florida to the USA after the British gave the land back to the Spanish; 1823: Tallahassee = new capital; 1835: the Indians refuse their resettlement, as a consequence, U.S. president Andrew Jackson sends troops to Florida --> deportation of the Indians; 1845: Florida = 27th state of the U.S.; 1861: Civil War; 1880: because of the European immigrants Florida now has a population of 270,000 people; 1940: population = 2 million, tourists = 2.5 million; 1959: because of Fidel Castro many Cubans come to Miami; 1971: Walt Disney World is opened

As a florida native, I can tell you that one coast is NOT "safer then the other when it comes to hurricanes. They are very unpredictable and will go where they choose. I have seen the worst ones go right from one coast, across the state to the other.
