Portugal

by traveldave - last update: Aug 28, 2007

Portugal is situated at the very edge of Europe, and for this reason, looked outward to the sea, not only for fishing, but for exploration. Much of the world was discovered and explored by Portuguese navigators such as Vasco da Gama and Magellan. As a result of these discoveries, the Portuguese language and culture were exported to such far-flung places as Brazil, many parts of Africa, India, and China (Macao). In return, spices, gold, and other commodities were brought to Lisbon and filled the coffers of the Portuguese treasury.

Nowadays, Portugal no longer controls a large portion of the world, but its age of discoveries influenced much of the world's history and culture to this day.

The age of discoveries has affected Portugal as well. There are monuments to the explorers, and many of the historic buildings in Portugal were financed by the income generated by trade and colonization. In addition, people from Portugal's former colonies now live there, and have made their contributions to the culture, music, and cuisine of the country.

When we went to Portugal. our main objective was to vacation in the Algarve, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Though we did visit Cascais and Estoril we did not see much of Lisbon,so thanks for showing me a bit of this wonderful city.

Very good tips. I liked a lot the Palácio Nacional de Sintra. Fatima was an adventure for me as by coincidence I was there at the day of huge pilgrimage!
