My one-week visit to Spain was too short, and only gave me a glimpse of this large (by European standards) and varied country. I visited Madrid, Ávila, Salamanca, Seville, and Córdoba. Because I traveled by bus between each city, I was able to see the beautiful and sometimes spectacular countryside, which consists of flat, rocky plains and mountainous regions covered with forests.
Each city that I visited is unique, and has its own distinct atmosphere, culture, and style of architecture. Madrid is a large, modern, cosmopolitan city, yet retains buildings and monuments from Spain's glorious past. Ávila is noted for its ancient protective walls, and Salamanca for its medieval cathedrals, university, and plazas. Seville, perhaps the most "Spanish" of cities, is famous for its flamenco dancing and guitar music, as well as beautiful buildings from different eras of Spanish history. Finally, Córdoba offers monuments to its Roman and Moorish past.
There is much more to see in this interesting country, which means I shall have to return someday to explore and experience more of what Spain has to offer.
