I have so far made two trips to Brazil, and neither could be more different. My first visit was in 1996 on a package tour to the most popular tourist destination in Brazil, the exotic and teeming city of Rio de Janeiro. That was a one-week trip during which I visited many of the attractions and sights of the city, and made a day trip down the coast to Angra dos Reis and another to the mountain town of Petrópolis. My second visit was in 2010 on a birdwatching trip where I spent ten days at a lodge high in the Serra do Mar mountain range, trying to see as many species of birds as possible in habitats ranging from Atlantic rainforest to coastal scrub, high altitude grasslands, and wetlands.

When people think about Brazil, they imagine either great cities with tens of millions of people or vast, unexplored, riverine jungles teeming with wildlife. Although Brazil is a huge country that involves much more than cities or jungles, my two short visits have provided me, I think, with a taste of at least two sides of this complex and fascinating country.

Wow, those shots of the Rio area from on-high really are awe-inspiring!! I've only seen a bit of Brazil near Iguasu Falls but have always wanted to visit Rio and the Amazon area. Thanks for the excellent pics and tips!

I found your tips on Brazil to be quite informative, honest, and interesting. The beaches look grand. You are lucky to stay in such luxurious places via your job. The photographs you have are quite alluring.

Rio de Janeiro is a cult place for many Russians who dream to visit it one day. I never dare even think about it. Though who knows? Thank David for making me to think it over! Christ the Redeemer statue attracts nor less then Sagrada Familia in Barselona.
