General Tips: Bangkok
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Thailand's capital and largest city is Bangkok. Known as Krung Thep, or "City of Angels," in Thai, it successfully combines the traditional and modern, with exotic temples side by side with modern, towering skyscrapers.

Bangkok is not without its problems, however. It is a huge city, with some estimates placing the population at over 15,000,000. That many people means heavy pollution (some of the worst in Asia), poverty, overcrowding, and traffic that can be horrendous. Despite its shortcomings, Bangkok is still one of the great cities of the world and should be visited at least once by serious world travelers.

Because Bangkok is in the tropics, it is a very hot and humid city. In fact, it has been rated as the hottest city in the world. The heat and humidity can make it difficult for someone from a cooler climate, such as myself.

However, the tropical climate blesses Bangkok with lush greenery that includes a profusion of orchids and other flowers, and fruits that are strange and unknown to people from other countries.

Excellent comprehensive tips. Enjoyed your Bangkok, Ayuthaya and River Kwai tips. Bring back memories. Durians are an acquired taste like cheese and oyster. Personally, I can resist a good durian.

Dream to visit Thailand one day. Your page makes my dream stronger! I don't like beach-holidays, only to combine it with excursions. There are a lot to see there. Thanks David for sharing! Carefuly done page!
