My only trip to Sweden so far was the result of a spontaneous decision and a lack of interest in going to a circus. I was on a student tour in Europe which included two or three days in Copenhagen. A review of the map showed me just how close Copenhagen is to the west coast of Sweden, and I began to think about how to get there.
It just so happened that our group was scheduled to visit a circus on one of our nights in Copenhagen. I thought this would be the perfect time to visit Sweden. Several members of our group thought it would be fun to go off on our own, and we discovered that there is frequent and inexpensive ferry service between Copenhagen and several Swedish ports. We chose the city of Malmö because it is the closest and least expensive to get to. Malmö, with over 250,000 inhabitants, is Sweden's third-largest city and the capital of the county of Skåne.
We rode bicycles to the ferry terminal, locked them up, and booked a trip on the next ferry to Malmö. In less than an hour we were there. We did not have much time to spend, as we had to get back to Copenhagen before it got too late. We did some sightseeing in the main square and had dinner in, of all places, a Chinese restaurant.
Despite the fact we were not able to see much of Sweden, my visit was one of those unplanned situations that add to the adventure and pleasure of travel. Besides, who would rather see a circus than run off to Sweden?
