In his song, Take Me Home Country Roads, John Denver describes West Virginia as "almost heaven." I experienced a little slice of heaven when I briefly passed through West Virginia on my way home from a road trip to the East Coast.
I crossed West Virginia's "panhandle," a narrow wedge of land between Pennsylvania and Ohio. At the point where I crossed the state, it is only 17 miles (27 kilometers) from the Pennsylvania state line to the Ohio state line. Therefore, I actually did not get to see much of the Mountain State. However, I spent some time in Wheeling, West Virginia's second-largest city, and saw some of the attractions in the area.

Very interesting tips on the now-retired Penitentiary as well as that ancient burial mound! You don't hear much about this state so I was intrigued enough to make a short trip there many years ago. | LoriPori Tue May 1, 2007 11:44 UTC
The Grave Creek Mound sounds interesting to me. Amazing how they were able to build such huge mounds and they didn't even have a backhoe!! We visited Wheeling many years ago to check out the Casino there. |
