In his song, Take Me Home Country Roads, John Denver describes West Virginia as "almost heaven." I experienced a little slice of heaven when I briefly passed through West Virginia on my way home from a road trip to the East Coast in October 2002.
I crossed West Virginia's "panhandle," a narrow wedge of land between Pennsylvania and Ohio. At the point where I crossed the state, it is only 17 miles (27 kilometers) from the Pennsylvania state line to the Ohio state line. Therefore, I actually did not get to see much of the Mountain State. However, I spent some time in Wheeling, West Virginia's second-largest city, and saw some of the attractions in the area.
I returned to West Virginia in April 2009 when I visited my brother, who moved to Morgantown in the northern part of the state. I was able to see and experience some of the sights and attractions in the Morgantown area, and they are reflected in new tips and pictures on this page.

Bwana_Brown Fri Apr 17, 2009 19:07 UTC Very interesting tips on the retired Penitentiary as well as that ancient burial mound! You don't hear much about this state so I was intrigued enough to make a short trip there many years ago. Nice additions with Coopers Rock State Forest and Morgantown! | terible22 Sat Nov 1, 2008 15:07 UTC Never been to Wheeling, I stayed in Summersville 2 months ago. Nice Page | Kuznetsov_Sergey Fri Jan 25, 2008 18:30 UTC A very interesting tip about the West Virginia Penitentiary. This prison looks like a middle age castle. I would like to experience "Life on the Inside." Thanks David! | Doctor38 Mon Nov 5, 2007 09:58 UTC Nice page, thanks for sharing |
