The area that makes up today's Pennsylvania was originally inhabited by Indians of the Shawnee, Delaware, Erie, Seneca, and Iroquoian Susquehannock tribes.
The first European settlement was a Swedish town on Tinicum Island in 1643. In 1655, the Dutch seized the settlement, but lost it to the British in 1664. The region was given by King Charles II to William Penn in 1681. Philadelphia was the capital of the colonies during the American Revolution, and of the United States from 1790 to 1880.
In October 2002, I crossed the entire State of Pennsylvania when I drove from its eastern border with New York to its western border with West Virginia. Along the way, I exited Interstate 80 to visit the Twin Bridges in the tiny town of Forks, and I spent a day in Pittsburgh, the second-largest city in the state, after Philadelphia.

Bwana_Brown Sat Apr 26, 2008 22:28 UTC I've driven through this state many times but never stopped, so thank you for the education. Lots of excellent tips here, including how steel rose and fell as well as those interesting stadiums! | LoriPori Mon Jan 7, 2008 15:36 UTC Nice little Pennsylvania page. I really enjoy seeing covered bridges. Too bad there's not that many around anymore. | scottishvisitor Thu Sep 13, 2007 16:36 UTC I'm glad you mentioned Andrew Carnegie - he did make a big impact on Pennsylvania = looks like an interesting city :) thanks for the tour | lou31 Thu Jul 19, 2007 03:19 UTC As cities go Pittsburgh seems like a nice one.
